Apple Mail App and IMAP Sent Folder Problem!

A few days ago I changed the setting for my IMAP mail account in Apple’s Mail app to save the sent messages on the server. I noticed that when that when I changed that setting it created folders on mac for the sent messages and it totally did not put the emails that I sent onto the server, it just left them in the folders created on my mac. I messed around with it for a little longer and realised that it wasn’t going to work that way. So I tried to find a solution on the net, and I came up with a lot people recommending going into Library => Preferences => com.apple.mail.plist and editing it to changes where the sent folders are. I was just about to do this went I realised that there must be an easier way to do it, so I found this super simple built in solution.

1. Expand you IMAP folders and Locate the Sent/Sent Messages Folder on the server, and select that folder.

2. Then simply go into the Mailbox menu => Use This Mailbox For => Sent, and that solves that problem.

I can’t believe I was going to go into com.apple.mail.plist file and edit it.

    So helpful, so simple.

BTW – changing the settings in Mail will update your iPhone too (after synching) so copies of sent messages are available everywhere, no matter if you sent it out on a desktop or iphone.

    Thank you!

my God, i thought you were going to chip in with some decisive insght at the end there, not leave it with ‘we leave it to you to decide’.

    Thanks!

I thought they would have made this easier to figure out, like put little dropdowns, etc on the preferences screen also. It is easy to figure out how to do this on the iphone, but not mail. Anyway, thanks!

Thank you it worked. But I got into other problem. when ever I send a mail my mail server places a copy of it in the sent folder so does Mac Mail, so all my sent mails are duplicated :( .
To avoid this I unchecked “Store unchecked messaged on Server”, but it reverted my sent folder settings to old one.
